I think you could! I would sand it down first and maybe prime it. Then spray paint it. And then seal it with lacquer. I did a project a couple weeks ago that was a tray that I spray painted. I ended up calling the company and confirmed that it was "food grade" safe. In fact, they told me that their paint is used on cribs and baby toys. It was Deft Clear Wood Finish.

I def agree with Jen. You could sand, prime, paint then seal...making sure that the sealer is food grade safe.
